Tucked in a corner of the Astor Plaza on Lafayette Street, for nearly 50 years the home of The New York Shakespeare Festival and The Public Theater, is a small performance venue whose size belies the depth and breadth of its influence in New York City. Joe's Pub at the Public Theater opened in 1998 and for over a decade has provided New York with a diverse menu of performance, defining New York City arts in the Aughts as much as documenting it.
